IntroductionThe Nehru Institute of Social Sciences was established in 1969 as a post graduate department for inter-disciplinary learning. A Masters course in social sciences with a specialization in Sociology was offered from 1996. As per the tenth plan allocations for the Vidyapeeth and the suggestions of the then UGC Chairman Prof. Nigvekar (ref. No. D. O. No. F. 2-5/2002 X plan) it was decided that all four departments that comprised the Nehru Institute of Social Sciences be separated into autonomous departments. Thus, a separate Post-Graduate Department of Sociology came into being with effect from September 2005. It has since then embarked upon its journey towards becoming a centre of higher learning and research in Sociology.
The M.A Course in Sociology attracts students from all over India. TMV remains the favorite destination of students also from South East Asia and Africa. The M.Phil (Vidyanishnat) and Ph.D (Vidyavachaspati) programs have adequate number of students. Each student is admitted after undergoing a rigorous selection procedure. Students are selected on the basis of their experience in research, academic merit and interview with the selection committee every year. As students from different social sciences background besides that of sociology are eligible for admission, the research areas selected by students cover multifarious fields and contribute to the research work of the department. As recommended by the UGC GR we have introduced Choice Based Credit System in the department in the academic year 2013-14. Each student has to undergo internal assessment of 40 marks and exam of 60 marks. The medium of teaching is English but assistance is provided in Marathi for students with a vernacular background. The Vidyapeeth library has a rich stock of books in social sciences and it also subscribes to recognized social science journals and weekly.
